From Riviera to Sierra: Ski in the Morning, Sunbathe in the Afternoon
By Marina Zivaree
Europe’s varied topography and gentle latitudes mean you can enjoy two seasons in one day. In a handful of destinations it is perfectly possible to carve down snowy pistes in the morning and be stretched out on a lounger beside the sea by late afternoon. This article – written by travel journalist Marina Zivaree for a luxury-lifestyle audience – explores the best ski-to-sea combinations in Europe and a few further-flung options where you can switch from slopes to surf without changing time zones. Each section highlights practical travel times, the optimum time of year, and indulgent places to stay. We also include middle-of-the-road and budget suggestions so everyone can sample the jet-set lifestyle.
Southern Spain – Sierra Nevada & the Costa del Sol
The Sierra Nevada is Europe’s most southerly ski resort and sits high above Granada at 2,100–3,300 m. Its altitude and extensive snow-making extend the season from December to April. The mountains are only 2½ hours by car from the warm sands of Marbella and the Costa del Sol. This corner of Andalucía enjoys over 320 days of sunshine a year, and winter temperatures rarely dip below 10 °C, so sunbathing on sheltered beaches is feasible even while the peaks are snow-capped.
Getting there
Car or chauffeured transfer: The most flexible option is to drive from Marbella via the A-92 to Granada and follow the well-signed road to the Sierra Nevada ski station. The journey takes around 2½ hours. Luxury travellers can arrange chauffeured limousines or hire high-performance vehicles from companies such as Marbella Rent a Car.
Train and taxi: AVE high-speed trains run from Málaga or Córdoba to Granada. From Granada station it’s a 45-minute taxi to the slopes. This option adds some change-over time but reduces driving.
Helicopter: Private helicopters can cut the journey to under an hour. Charter services from Helity or Marbella Helicopters can land near the ski station (weather permitting), but expect prices from €3 000 per flight.

Italy – Ligurian & Adriatic Coasts with the Apennines
Italy’s narrow peninsula means the journey from coast to mountain is often measured in minutes rather than hours. Here are three combinations to savour seafood and ski slopes on the same day.
Cinque Terre & Zum Zeri / Nevegal
From the colourful villages of the Cinque Terre you can be on the slopes of Zum Zeri in just over an hour. The resort sits at 1,600 m with six runs and a 600 m snow park; the ski season runs late December–March. Sea temperatures in the Ligurian Sea hover around 13–18 °C in December and climb to 24 °C by August, so early spring is perfect for sunbathing on the pebbly beach of Monterosso.
Further north, the Nevegal ski area near Belluno offers 23 km of pistes between 1,050 and 1,675 m and is only 20 minutes from Belluno, 1 hour 20 from Venice and 1 h 30 from Lido di Jesolo’s beaches. The season peaks in January and February.
Stay:
- Cinque Terre luxury: Grand Hotel Portovenere – former Franciscan convent with vaulted ceilings and a panoramic restaurant overlooking the harbour (from €400/night). Mid-range: boutique guesthouses in Vernazza (~€150). Budget: hostels in Riomaggiore (~€40). In Zum Zeri the choice is simple chalets; many skiers base themselves in La Spezia.
- Venice/Jesolo: Belmond Hotel Cipriani (ultra-luxury) or JW Marriott Venice on its own island; from €450. Budget: guesthouses in Jesolo from €60. On the mountain, Hotel La Griglia provides rooms from €120.

Abruzzo – Roccaraso & the Adriatic
In central Italy the Alto Sangro ski area around Roccaraso boasts more than 90 km of slopes between 1,309 and 2,141 m, served by six gondolas and nine chairlifts. The skiing runs December to early April. From Roccaraso it is about 1 hour 20 minutes by car to coastal towns such as Fossacesia on the Adriatic Sea. Sea temperatures are 12–19 °C in December and reach 24 °C in summer.
Stay:
- Mountain: Hotel Pizzalto – ski-to-door property with spa and à-la-carte restaurant (from €200/night). Mid-range: Hotel Il Maniero (€120). Budget: B&Bs in Roccaraso (€60).

From the ski centre it is about an hour’s drive to Limassol or Nicosia, where winter daytime temperatures often exceed 15 °C and the sea is swimmable by late spring.

Beyond Europe – Surf & Snow Elsewhere
While Europe provides the classic slope-to-shore experience, travellers can venture further for an even wilder contrast. Here are three one-country examples beyond the continent.
Morocco – Oukaïmeden & Taghazout
Morocco’s Oukaïmeden ski resort sits 75–80 km south of Marrakech in the High Atlas. The drive takes 1½–2 hours and the season runs December–March. Visitors can hire a driver from Marrakech – a necessary luxury as roads can be rough. After skiing, return to Marrakech and continue another 3½ hours south to Taghazout, a laid-back surf village 23 km north of Agadir. Taghazout’s surf season stretches September–April, with the best swells December–March.
Stay:
- Luxury: La Mamounia, Marrakech – a legendary palace hotel with lush gardens of orange, olive and palm trees and four restaurants and bars. Rooms from €600. Fairmont Taghazout Bay – five-star resort with surf concierge and spa.
- Mid-range: Surf Maroc offers stylish surf camps and self-catering apartments in Taghazout. Riad Chorfa, Marrakech, offers a riad experience from €90.
- Budget: Hashpoint Surf Camp or Surf Berbere provide dorms from €25 including board hire.

Australia – Mount Hotham & the Gippsland Coast
In the southern hemisphere, Victoria’s Mount Hotham offers 320 ha of ski terrain and 66 runs. Visitors driving from Melbourne reach the slopes in about 4½ hours and then continue east to Gippsland’s Ninety Mile Beach or Lake Tyers in another few hours. After a morning on the snow you can be surfing or stand-up-paddling in the afternoon thanks to wild yet relatively warm conditions.
Spa indulgence: The Onsen Retreat & Spa at Dinner Plain (10 km from Hotham) offers massages, facials and a 38 °C Japanese-style onsen. A bathing session costs $45; private geisha baths and package treatments are also available. Yoga classes and a fitness centre complement the experience.
Stay:
- Luxury: Peppers Marysville near the mountain; Ramada Resort by Wyndham Phillip Island for the coast. Mid-range: chalets in Dinner Plain from A$250/night. Budget: shared lodges in Hotham village and motels in Lakes Entrance.

New Zealand – Mount Taranaki & Surfing the North Island
New Zealand’s 15,000 km of coastline makes surf-to-ski days surprisingly easy. On the North Island, the Manganui Ski Area on Mount Taranaki sits above the coastal town of New Plymouth. Surf breaks such as Fitzroy Beach and Boulders Bay are within the city, and from there it’s only about an hour’s drive to the ski field. The best time for this dual adventure is late June to mid-October. Alternatively, from Christchurch on the South Island you can reach Mt Hutt in about two hours.
Stay:
- New Plymouth: The Devon Hotel – buffet restaurant, heated outdoor pool and free mountain bikes (from NZ$180). Mid-range: King and Queen Hotel Suites. Budget: hostels near the foreshore (≈NZ$35).
- Christchurch: The George – boutique luxury hotel with award-winning restaurants and free bikes; Dyers House (Edwardian villa); Otahuna Lodge for country-house charm. Budget: motels in Riccarton.

Conclusion
The dream of skiing and sunbathing on the same day is no longer the preserve of private-jet owners. In Europe, high-altitude resorts and mild coasts make twin-season days accessible: Sierra Nevada pairs with the Costa del Sol for a guaranteed sunny finish; the French Riviera serves as a glamorous base for day trips to Gréolières or helicopter jaunts to Tignes; Italy’s narrow waist allows Cinque Terre fish lunches to precede evening aperitifs in alpine lodges; and Cyprus offers perhaps the strangest sensation of making snow angels before ordering calamari by the Med. Further afield, Morocco’s High Atlas, Australia’s Alps and New Zealand’s volcanic peaks prove that you can chase snow and surf almost anywhere. Whether you opt for five-star palaces, boutique chalets or surf shacks, these itineraries let you experience summer and winter on your own terms – and make for stories your friends will scarcely believe.
